How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Idaho

Idaho Affordable Health InsuranceThrough the Department of Health and Welfare, Idaho has a health insurance assistance program called Access to Health Insurance that helps people pay their premiums.

The idea is to make health insurance more affordable for people whose incomes are at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) who are covered by a health insurance plan but having difficulty paying their premiums.

Medicare is available through the Department of Insurance for people 65 and older and those with disabilities. It is managed through Idaho's Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) program. State Medicare insurance programs are federally funded and give low-income residents health care and prescription drug insurance.

Under Idaho's Individual Health Insurance Availability Act, there is also insurance help for those under the age of 65 who are not insured and not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid. It states that insurance companies must offer health insurance regardless of their health status. If denied, the insurance company must offer them one of four High Risk Reinsurance Pool (HRA) plans.

Medicaid is available for those age 65 and older, under 19, blind or disabled, and pregnant women. Income limits apply. The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) assists children under 19 whose family income is too high for Medicaid.
