How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Massachusetts
In Massachusetts, public assistance and other programs are available for low-income residents to pay for medical insurance and medical services.
MassHealth includes both Medicaid and Medicaid for children programs called CHIP, or Children's Health Insurance Program. These programs pay for all or most of the health care costs for those who qualify.
In general, MassHealth includes families with children under 19, pregnant women, disabled, long-term unemployed, elderly (65 or older), those with HIV, and women with breast or cervical cancer. Income limitations range from 100% to 300% of Federal Poverty Guidelines (FPG), depending upon the specific program.
The MassHealth Dental Program covers dental care for people both over and under 21. The services covered under this insurance program include cleanings, checkups, extractions and x-rays. Children under 21 also receive additional coverage under this program that adds fillings, root canals, oral surgery and more. There is no cost as long as the patient goes to a provider who accepts MassHealth insurance.
MassHealth mental health services cover treatments for adults with mental or emotional disorders. The Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI) is part of MassHealth and covers mental health treatments for children with serious emotional problems. MassHealth also covers treatments for methadone addiction and other substance abuse treatment services and outpatient counseling. For people who don't qualify for MassHealth, there is Commonwealth Care for uninsured low- and moderate-income residents. Very low-income residents pay nothing, and others pay affordable monthly premiums based on income. Commonwealth Choice is designed to help those who don't qualify for Commonwealth Care with premiums at affordable rates.
Medicare is a shared cost medical insurance program for people 65 and older or those under 65 with disabilities. It provides basic medical coverage but is not need-based. The Children's Medical Security Plan (CMSP) is also a basic health insurance program covering children under 19 who do not qualify for benefits through MassHealth; it includes medical and dental coverage.
