How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Mississippi

Mississipi Affordable Health InsuranceMedicaid is a federally-funded program that pays for medical services for low-income people. In the state of Mississippi, it is managed through the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.

Those who qualify include the elderly (65 or older), disabled, blind, pregnant women and low-income adults with children under 19. Income guidelines must be met. It includes Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for uninsured children up to 19 in families whose income does not exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). There is also a Poverty Level Medicaid Program covering children under 19 for families with incomes at or below 100% of FPL.

Medicare is health insurance for people 65 and older or those with disabilities. It covers medical, hospital and prescription services for low-income people who meed the income guidelines. There is an affordable premium charged for this type of coverage.

There is also the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool non-profit organization that helps people who have been turned down for insurance due to pre-existing health issues. It was created as a result of the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association Act to ensures that all residents of Mississippi receive health insurance.

Mississippi is currently in the process of developing a health insurance exchange system as a result of the federal Patient Protection Affordable Care Act. When implemented, the Mississippi Health Exchange will provide more affordable health insurance choices for low-income residents of Mississippi.
