How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of New Jersey

New Jersey Affordable Health InsuranceLow-cost or no-cost health care insurance is available for low-income New Jersey residents through New Jersey Family Care.

Families whose income is no more than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) may receive coverage for children under 19 and pay no premiums, and as little as $5-$10 in co-payments. This program is for families whose employer does not provide health insurance and cannot afford to buy private health insurance.

Five income categories ensure that most low-income families can receive medical insurance benefits. Families with two or more people and incomes not exceeding 133% of the FPL pay no premiums or co-pays for coverage. Families with incomes up to 250%, 300% and 350% of the FPL are eligible to receive health insurance coverage for their children and pay very low premiums and deductibles. The NJFamilyCare Program covers hospital and doctor visits, dental, vision, prescriptions, mental health care and more.

Medicaid is a state- and federal-funded program for the elderly (65 and older), disabled, and pregnant women whose family income does not exceed 200% of the FPL.

The New Jersey WorkAbility program is available and provides medical insurance benefits to those who continue to work, have disabilities, and whose incomes are too high for Medicaid. To be eligible, persons must be between 16 and 64, working full- or part-time and have a permanent disability. Income and asset limitations apply.
