How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Rhode Island

Rhode Island Affordable Health InsuranceInsurance options for low-income residents of Rhode Island includes Medicare for those over 65 or with disabilities. It is an affordable shared cost program that offers Medicare Part A (hospital), B (medical), and D (prescription drugs). The Medicare Advantage Plan covers Parts A & B.

Other affordable health insurance programs are available through the Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner. They include the Rhode Island medical Assistance Program (Medicaid) funded with both state and federal monies. Medicaid includes RIte Care and RIte Share.

RICare is designed to provide comprehensive health insurance for uninsured families, children, and pregnant women. Programs through Neighborhood Health Plan of RI, UnitedHealthcare of New England, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island gives choices to low-income citizens. For families who are getting coverage through employer-sponsored programs, Rite Share helps pay all or part of their premiums. Income guidelines apply in order to qualify for either program.

The Rhode Island Department of Human Services, Division of Elderly Affairs is responsible for managing the Rhode Island Pharmaceutical Assistance Program to the Elderly (RIPAE) program. Those age and above who are already enrolled in Medicare Part D are eligible to receive payment up to 60% of their prescription co-payments. There is a similar program for those age 55 to 64 with disabilities.
