South Dakota Affordable Health InsuranceMedical assistance for low-income families is available through South Dakota Department of Social Services. A family of four, for example, with an adjusted monthly income of $885 would be eligible for the South Dakota Medical Assistance Program, also known as Medicaid.

The program covers medical services by hospitals and clinics, dental and vision services, physician charges, most prescriptions, nursing home care and rehabilitation, mental health treatment, and ambulance service.

South Dakota children under 19 are eligible for health coverage under the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Income guidelines apply and are different for families who have private insurance and those who have no insurance.

The Prescription Assistance Program is available for low-income families whose insurance does not cover prescriptions. Low income would be defined as annual income not exceeding $24,000 for a couple; asset limitations also apply.
